The younger hitmaker returned the favour when he co-produced Blunt’s wide-ranging 2017 album The Afterlove. Blunt also paved the way for Ed Sheeran’s global conquest with his knack for writing plaintive songs that could simultaneously be hauntingly intimate, rich in detail and immediately memorable. It was one of many songs on Blunt’s 2004 debut, Back to Bedlam, that helped spur a wider shift for singer/songwriters away from the more brooding style of David Gray and Damien Rice back toward the warmer sounds of ‘70s heroes like Elton John and Cat Stevens. Instead, Blunt’s proven to be a remarkably hardy and enduring artist in the years since he first bared his soul on “You’re Beautiful”, a confession of unrequited love that became one of the biggest hits of the 2000s. But as you might expect of a star who spent much of his pre-fame life serving in the army, he’s not as easily bruised as he sometimes sounds.

It's guaranteed to satisfy regardless of what genre of music you are into.James Blunt can seem like the most soft-hearted kind of singer with his trembling falsetto and lyrics full of yearning. I've never listened to an album so much since Keane's. He is to 2005 what Damien Rice was to 2004: definitely the best new artist of the year! James Blunt's voice takes some time to get used to, but his passion, lyrics and music are irresistible. "Cry" and "No Bravery" are two emotionally packed tracks through which James tells us what he thinks of war. The album goes on with songs commenting on the craziness of life's affairs with "Out of my Mind" to infidelity with "Billy." He even makes a reference to 'Dorain Gray"-Oscar Wild's alter ego character from The Picture of Dorian Gray. Then comes my favorite track in this release, "Tears and Rain", in which James wishes he could do away with all the demons in his head and soul the conflicts that come with the simple act of living life. He ends it with the chilling, "I'm so hollow baby / I'm so hollow." In the melancholic ballad "Goodbye my Lover", James pleads with his departed love to remember the good times they had together and try to be his friend. "Wisemen", one of my favorite tracks, asks "Gotta ask yourself the question / where are yo now?" It's one of those Equally beautiful and heartbreaking as he sings, "But it's time to face the truth / I will never be with you." Loved it and recommend it to any James Blunt fans, either fully fledged Female fans or in the dark, secret Male fans who find time behind closed doors to bung one of his Mrs CD's on and relax to the ultimate sounds of James the king, the god, even the MASTER of middle of the road pop music. It's followed by "You're Beautiful"-an ode to love that can't be had. The ecstatic High starts off the album with James pleading, "Will you be my shoulder / when I am gray and older / promise me tomorrow starts with you." The ballad-heavy, Back to Bedlam, is romanticism reinvented. It's definitely the best release by a new artist this year hands down. This stunning debut by James Blunt-a British soldier turned musician-will take your breath away literally! Every single track on this beautiful release is lyrically multidimensional with incredible depth and addictive melodies. Tracks like the UK smash "You're Beautiful" and "Goodbye My Lover" are backhanded anti-love songs that suggest Elvis Costello's lyrical wit, and add a little bite to this otherwise radio-ready set of tunes. Blunt shares Smith's knack for pretty mopery and self-destructive tendencies (several songs, most obviously the opening "High," tacitly romanticize drug use), as well as Coldplay's talent for decorating simple melodies with effective production tricks. A collection of midtempo ballads based around Blunt's acoustic guitar and piano and his high, reedy voice, BACK TO BEDLAM is tailor made for a generation of sensitive college girls and their frat-boy boyfriends. Description : James Blunt is a former Royal Air Force soldier who saw active combat during the NATO mission in Kosovo, an experience detailed in his debut album's harrowing closer, "No Bravery." Judging from the rest of BACK TO BEDLAM, he's also in the market to become either a one-man Coldplay or a more commercially acceptable version of Elliott Smith.
